There is a question that every young man who has ever felt invisible, unwanted, and alone will eventually ask himself: What is wrong with me? The incel forums have an answer. And it is the wrong answer.
The Genetic Determinism Trap
The incel forums claim that dating success is determined by immutable traits—looks, height, race, bone structure—and that nothing a man can do will change his fate. This is a misreading of evolutionary psychology so profound that it would be laughable if it were not so destructive. The “blackpill” states that “dating success is determined by things men cannot easily improve on such as looks, money, status, physical stature, race, IQ and neurotypicality, rather than personality” and that “everyone’s sexual market value is mostly or entirely genetically determined”. The research on mate selection is clear that presentation, social skills, and availability matter far more than the incel forums admit. The man who has the habitus—the embodied disposition of the ordinary, unmarked, unthreatening social presence—does not need to be genetically perfect. He needs to be available.
The Hypergamy Myth
The incel forums claim that women reject 80% of the male population and are only interested in the top 20%. This statistic is uncited. It is a truncated presentation of an incel interpretation of the Pareto Principle that has no empirical backing. The research on female intrasexual competition shows that women do not select on a simple status hierarchy. They select on compatibility, availability, and social competence. The reason women may appear to reject the majority of men is not because they are genetically programmed to do so. It is because the moderated regime has eliminated the deniable, low-stakes, unmoderated interaction that allows two people to move from encounter to union without either losing face.
The Average Incel Misconception
The media stereotype of the incel is a young, white, right-wing man who is not in employment, education, or training. The research on 561 incel forum users found something different. The participants were a diverse group: 58% white, 42% people of colour, 40.6% middle class, 42.4% employed full-time. The average age was 26. They were not uniformly unemployed, uneducated, or politically extreme. What they did share was extraordinarily poor mental health. Thirty-seven per cent reported daily suicidal thoughts. Forty-eight per cent reported high levels of loneliness. Eighty-six per cent reported experiencing bullying. Thirty per cent met the criteria for an autism assessment, compared with one per cent of the general population. The incel identity is not primarily a political identity. It is a coping mechanism. It is a narrative that explains the pain and absolves the sufferer of responsibility.
The Anti-Therapeutic Logic
The incel forums offer no solution because their ideology cannot offer a solution. The blackpill is a philosophy of resignation. Therapy, social learning, education, exercise, improved communication, and expanded social networks are all dismissed as futile. This creates an “anti-therapeutic logic: the ideology explains pain by denying the possibility of meaningful change, and seeking mental-health support is actively discouraged within parts of the community”. The forums see mental health support as a “counter-terrorism” approach, as if the goal were to manage the incel threat rather than to help the incel person. But the research suggests that mental health support is likely to be the one thing that helps the incel.
The Availability Posture
The genuinely desirable man does not run a script. He does not “open” with a line. He does not perform confidence or deploy a technique. He is, in the simplest possible terms, available. He is present in the social field without demanding anything from it. He comments on the weather, the bus seat, the price of tomatoes—not as a strategy, but because he is there, and the idle talk is the ordinary medium of social life.
The research on male social confidence in initial opposite-sex interactions confirms that men who are perceived as socially confident are also perceived as more romantically desirable and worthy of future contact. The mechanism is not performance but presence. The man who is at ease in the social field does not need to declare interest, because his ease is itself the signal. He is not chasing. He is not validating. He is simply available, and his habitus does his work for him.
The Habitus of Social Ease
The difference between the naturally desirable man and the incel is not genetic. It is habitus—Bourdieu’s term for the embodied presence. The habitus is the set of ingrained habits and instincts you absorb so thoroughly that they stop feeling learned and start feeling like your nature. The man who has the habitus does not experience idle talk as a performance. It is second nature. He learned it, as boys have always learned it, through thousands of hours of unmoderated, unscripted, low-stakes social interaction—in the courtyard, the street, the schoolyard, the pub.
The incel has the script but not the habitus. He has memorised the lines but cannot inhabit the character. The result is the fidgeting, the hesitation, the avoidance—the visible seams of a performance that has never been absorbed. The woman reads the seams. The cringe is the affective response to watching someone try and fail to inhabit a social role.
The Non-Insistence Rule
The availability posture has a single structural rule: non-insistence after the first offer. The man makes the opening gesture. The comment, the observation, the idle word. Then he stops. He does not pursue. He does not repeat. He does not chase. The next move must be hers, because only she can calibrate the face-risk of acknowledging what the opening might mean.
The research on courtship persistence in honour-shame contexts confirms this. A man who persists after a clear non-response forces the woman to either acknowledge the approach (and lose face) or explicitly reject it (and risk making a scene). Both outcomes are worse than the quiet collapse of a bridgehead that was never crossed. The non-insistence is not a technique. It is the structural condition of the woman’s ability to engage without loss of face.
What Actually Works
The man who has the habitus does not need to be told what to do. He makes himself available, he does not insist, and he waits. The woman who is interested will signal through what’s socially acceptable in the context. The returned glance, the extended conversation, the fabricated excuse for contact. The mating, if it occurs, occurs later, after the availability has been established, after the presence has become known, after the ordinary sociability has done its work.
The incel wants the mating now. He wants the declared intent, the legible signal, the performance. And the woman, trained by the moderated regime to reject the declared intent, rejects him. The failure is not his looks or his income. It is his posture. He has forgotten how to be available. He has learned only how to perform. And the performance, visible from a mile away, is the one thing the woman cannot accept without losing face. The man who wants to escape the incel script must stop performing. He must re-enter the unmoderated world. Not to approach women. To be social. To be present without a purpose. The habitus is built through repetition. The Western society ought to acknowledge this.
By filtering out ten creeps today, they produce ten thousand of them a decade later because nobody got the chance to practice live interactions. This is already causing friction in the Global South, where the Western Passport Bro is seen as cringe for his lack of calibration.
The modern West wants to have their cake and eat it too: You can’t have men with good social skills without allowing yourself to feel uncomfortable with the ones who don’t. Practice makes all of the difference.
